Underscore is an exhibition comprising five international artists who have each been participating in the Transit Lounge residency at Josetti Höffe, Berlin. For this show, the artists have been working collaboratively and individually on a series of new works reflecting on their experiences of Berlin, while also addressing the theme of the residency, "transit." The resulting sound, installation, and video works explore marginalised spaces and discarded objects. In this case, the underscore serves to underline the spaces in between, the ignored and the unnoticed. In a reconfiguration, the familiar and the preconceived are conflated with the lost and forgotten.

The Transit Lounge is an artist-in-residence program for Australian + Berlin-based artists and architects, which aims to blur the boundaries between the disciplines through a focus on short, process-focused, interdisciplinary collaborations. The program challenges artists to rethink their approach to art-making by encouraging them to adapt, reuse, evolve and even destroy the work of previous artists in the space.

Isabelle Toland, Jasper Knight and Miriam Mlecek are all artists-in-residence at the Transit Lounge. They will discuss their own work in reference to the process of the Transit Lounge, and to the broader context of contemporary Australian art and architecture.

This is a project Izzy and I did together in September last year. You might remember these hot pink dinosaurs when they were small wooden toys . This installation was of six works that sat outside Customs House in Sydney for Art and About 06. They are made out of marine plywood, perspex and metal and sit on 280kg steel plates.

BIOGRPAHY: JASPER KNIGHT

Jasper completed a BVA at Sydney College of the Arts(SCA) in 1999 and a Master of Art in 2002 at College of Fine Art (COFA). He has shown since 2001 in every major artist run space in Sydney and is the Director of the Half Dozen ARI (Artist run initiative) that exhibits and supports of 50 emerging artists every year. This year’s festival was held at Gallery 4A, Ivan Dougherty Gallery, The Museum of Sydney, Firstdraft Gallery and the Mckell Building. Jasper’s last Sydney show was painting and installation at Phatspace ARI, Darlinghurst. His first Melbourne show was at Metro 5 Gallery earlier this year and his first solo London show is at the end of 2006. In 2005 and 2006 Jasper has been a finalist in the Archibald Prize, The Wynne Prize, The Abn-Amro Prize and has won the Rocks Emerging Art Prize, The Freedman Foundation Scholarship, the OZCO new work grant, the NAVA Marketing grant and was appointed to the board of the Asia-Australia Art Association earlier this year. Jasper’s main work is enamel mixed-media painting and secondly sculptural installation.
